Photovoltaic Systems

Demand for renewable-energy technologies is growing rapidly, requiring a greater number of skilled system technicians. Photovoltaic Systems is a comprehensive guide to the design and installation of several types of residential and commercial PV systems. The content covers the principles of PV electricity and how to effectively incorporate it into electrical systems. Numerous illustrations explain the concepts behind how PV arrays and other components operate, and photographs of actual installations show how components are integrated together to form complete systems. Content also covers the topics needed for solar installer certification by NABCEP. Photovoltaic systems is the essential guide to all aspects of PV systems. This second edition updates electrical requirements per the 2008 NEC® and expands the coverage of sun position, shading analysis, and computer modeling of system performance expectations.

the book actually met my expectations; the charts & tables are actually needed & they do represent a realistic view of the industry foranyone with intentions of securing certification as an installer of Solar Photo Voltaic electrical energy Systems or panels . I would recommend this to any certified electrician or journeyman electrician as an enhancement to their profession, they go hand in hand in terms of work ethics including NEC (National Electrical Code) standards for stand-alone and utility interactive photo voltaic systems. the book is very well put together and was delivered in a very short time, I was amazed; thank you.

Got this book for a class to prep for the Entry Level NABCEP exam. This book covers most of the areas needed. Of course, it can't help with the hands-on stuff, which is why there is a lab. It is helpful to have an instructor that can explain some of the concepts presented in the book, because the book doesn't always explain things in layman's terms. There is a LOT of detail presented, plenty of formulas, charts and graphs. The theory is pretty well covered, but don't expect to be able to get on a roof and start slamming-in solar modules. In addition to the class I plan to volunteer my time to get hands-on experience at some local solar installations. The NABCEP expects you to be "book smart", as well as having been in the field installing solar equipment. I'm looking for a career change, and have hands-no experience with PV solar installs. If you are already installing solar, and looking to take the NABCEP, this would be a good book to use to study the theory behind PV.

I bought this book for an online class that I am enrolled in. I found this book to be much more technical than what I bargained for however, it is all explained very well. I was looking for more of a general overview of how photovoltaic systems worked and what components were necessary to go along with an install. What this book does is explain all the mathematics, angles of sun and basic electrical theory that corresponds with an installation as well as what you need to set up a system. I learned about inverters, batteries, solar panels and a great deal of each of these plus more. Some of it went over my head but much of it I will refer to in the future as this is an excellent reference to have handy.

This book is a comprehensive look into every aspect of a PV System. It most likely is the most informative and instructional book on the subject matter. It does not discuss other forms of alternative energy such as solar thermal, wind, or hydro, but after all, it is called PV Systems and not Alternative Energy. After careful inspection of the book, you should have no problem in designing your own working PV array for experiment or small, personal use only. You, of course, need a variety of licenses to design and install arrays commercially, but this book gives you fundamental insight to how they operate, how the modules are built, and how to build an array. This book will make you want to experiment with PV and will open your eyes to the feasibility of solar energy.

I just received the book and have only started reading it.The print in the book is tiny. The publisher decided to put huge margins (almost 2 inches) of empty space on each page edge and then squeeze the text down in the remainder. The paper stock is also shiny so light at a particular angle causes glare.Generally I prefer computer readable books so I can control the font size and search the text for anything I may be interested in. That wasn't an option with this book and it never occurred to me that a publisher would be so dumb as to waste page space and at the same time reduce readability. Live and learn.Amazon should provide a rating of each book for its physical characteristics such as font size, wasted page space, illustration quality, and other factors that are publisher related. The author shouldn't be penalized for what the publisher decided to do, even though the author shares some of the responsibility for the finished product.Update ===================I discovered there's a newer version of the book and it is machine readable only Amazon doesn't offer it.I just finished reading the book. The first 8 chapters are either a history lesson or a glossary of terms. Not that useful. Chapter 9 is the reason to own the book. It provides the framework for how to think about the issues involved in bridging your needs for power and the actual physical products to produce that power. The thought processes used are logical, well stated, and the formulas provided are a succinct expression of a solution step by step. The provided spreadsheets however leave a lot to be desired. Many of the sheets are password protected so you can't see the formulas per cell and can't modify the sheet in any way. Even the cell widths are too small so if you input a larger number you can't see it.The calculations are also for the trivial cases of typical On/Off equipment. Once you try to model a modern piece of gear like the newer A/C compressors that are continuously variable between a min and max current, essentially On all the time but with varying power needs, the calculations simply don't work. I rewrote the spreadsheets to look at a day as a sequence of 24 hours of loading. The concept of what the author calls "Weighted Operating Time" is valid for On/Off equipment, but completely invalid for anything that has a significantly variable power requirement during a day.The assumption that autonomy is in days is another assumption that limits the books usefulness. Any project that has high power requirements can't afford to have the battery capacity for even one days worth of autonomy. My project would see the battery costs 10 times as large as the other equipment costs. What I need is a king size UPS where the battery can power things for an hour while manual intervention handles a particular emergency situation. I rewrote the autonomy calculations to look at things in hours instead of days so I can create a powerful UPS or the typical battery backup scenario depending on the number of hours I specify. The remaining chapters don't offer the kind of information I was hoping for.Chapter 10 - Mechanical Integration - basically says mount stuff and offers some common sense guides. It doesn't go into detail on the various methods and gadgets that might be available to actually do the job. i.e. Do you put a lag screw into the back of a panel to mount it? What size, how deep? Are some type of ears provided on some panels and not others? Are hold downs or clamps available to do the job? What? I'm no smarter about this after having read the book. Disappointed.Chapter 11 - Electrical Integration - lists the sections of the NEC that need to be researched. OK - that's good advice. Mention is made of the various boxes and gadgets electricians use in the solar field, but again, so little detail that I have no idea what I might need to actually order parts. The remaining chapters are just as vague. All good information as far as it goes, it just doesn't go far enough to get the job done.

This book is a good one to use for getting the basics and mid-level knowledge down. The first sections are kind of pointless, it is a text book however. I would buy this over anything else because it contains the most useful and scientific approaches to PV system design etc. from there you can create your own spread sheets and get stuff from the internet. Now forums with PV info are coming up really nicely, and those are always going to be better than a book for specific hardware. This book is great to always go back to. worth buying 100%.
